Nestled in the wooded hills outside Birmingham, this new-construction retreat became an exercise in nuance and understanding what clients seek even when it’s softly expressed. While a lighter, gentler sensibility was desired, it became clear that those qualities required a counterpoint: a foundation of weight and permanence.

Alabama fieldstone wraps the façade, curving around the pool and framing distant city views, and continues indoors, strengthening the dialogue between architecture and landscape. The material tempers expanses of neutral walls, just as a monumental concrete table is softened by antique wooden chairs dressed in delicate fabric.

Throughout, the design moves in rhythm—push and pull, compression and release. Decorative pieces, thoughtfully curated and precisely placed, provide the final cadence, lending depth, balance, and quiet resonance to the home.

I don’t even feel like it takes time to find objects, because that’s never not on my mind. This part of it is just second nature. It’s part of me.
